Market Surplus Installation

In June 2017, street artist Hanksy organized the “Market Surplus” show in a derelict warehouse in the LES of Manhattan. He asked 10 artists to paint 10 murals; nothing was for sale, and the show was only on view for 2 days. After that, the building will be demolished. I chose a mismatched group of walls because they looked terrible. Nothing makes cute, colorful Mister Meltys look better than when they’re on an ugly stretch of walls. I thought that painting 8 characters, near human size, on the walls would provide a great opportunity for people to pose and interact with them. We painted all 8 on the day before the opening and they think really tied together and brightened up the space!
