Bristol Museum and Europe

I spent a week in Bristol getting ready for the big Art From The New World exhibition at the Bristol City Museum, and what a week it was. My girlfriend, Stephanie, and I got there and didn't have any time to adjust to the time. Jetlagged and all, we got up early every morning to paint and manage our assistants. And by the time it was almost done, fellow friends and artists that show at Corey Helford showed up for the opening. It was surreal to be rushing to finish up the mural and then meet Dita von Teese as she looked over her stage set-up. Of course, the big VIP opening was great. What a night, and what an undertaking the whole thing was. I'm very happy to be so involved with such a ground-breaking show.

After Bristol, Stephanie and I traveled to Berlin, Paris and London. We spent an amazing two weeks seeing so much stuff: from the Mona Lisa, to a Nazi concentration camp, to the top of the Eiffel tower, to Stonehenge, to Hitler's bunker, to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, to the Tower of London, to the bell tower in Notre Dame. We saw so much amazing history and ate so much amazing food. The above photos are just a small percentage of the shots we took, in no particular order.

First off, I'm going to back to Giant Robot New York for an all new solo show opening April 17th. I'm hard at work on a bunch of stuff for it. Here is the official word:
Giant Robot is proud to host Adventures in Lollipopland, a show featuring new works by Buff Monster. In Adventures in Lollipopland, Buff Monster is celebrating "the duality of cute and ice-cream-inspired traditional imagery, along with heavy-metal-inspired darker imagery. Some pieces are cute and fun; others are darker and more Satanic." In contrast to his last show at GRNY, which featured kaiju-inspired characters along with a lot of writing in kanji, he considers this to be a neo traditional show. Pieces are slated to include 3 16" x 16" paintings, 30 10" x 10" wood panels, and some small, fun 7" x 7" pieces, as well as custom toys.

The show runs April 17, 2010 - May 19, 2010.
Reception: Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 6:30 -10p.m.

Star Wars Trading Cards

Topps, the big big trading card company (who put out the timeless Garbage Pail Kids) is releasing Series 5 of their Star Wars Galaxy cards on February 24th. They got 100 artists to do sketch cards and I'm one of the artists that did 'em. I'm happy to be involved in such a unique project. And there is a flickr page devoted to the sketch cards.

I will have a booth at Designer Con this weekend and I made an exclusive figure for the event. This a 100% Hand-painted 3" Buff Monster GID vinyl figure with high gloss polyurethane topcoat. Packaged in a box (silkscreened by Buff Monster), and a 3-color signed and numbered silkscreen print. Edition of 10 (+1 A/P), $200 each. 2 big events this Saturday!!!

This Saturday is the Meet the Artists party at the Hello Kitty show at Royal/T. I got two super awesome things happening there! First, at 10am, we'll be releasing Series 2 of the Hello Kitty panels. The first series sold out right away, so they asked me to come up with a new design and make another series. And I really like how they came out! $250 each just like the first ones. Second, from 4-9pm, Hit + Run will be doing live silkscreening on shirts. I did one of the 5 designs that will be available! Each shirt is $20 and all money goes to charity. More info the whole day's events here!

Also, 2-4pm on Saturday is my book signing and print release at Munky King. The print is a 4-color, 18x24 silkscreen print, edition of 100. It'll be a fun event with a fusion taco truck outside and a chance to win a Buff Monster Vannen watch with every book purchase. I'll be signing stuff available there and whatever else people want me to sign.

Kidrobot just released this womens shirt with my graphics! It features a faux long-sleeved layer made of soft cotton thermal, light plastisol Sweet Skull graphics and Buff Monster logo on the front, and a small Robot Head embroidered on the back neck. Each shirt is uniquely numbered with love.

My big show opened on Saturday and it was awesome. We had an ice cream truck giving away free ice cream. The turn out was insane. And the response to the new work was really great. Yes, it's almost time for my next big solo show at Corey Helford Gallery. This is my third solo show with CHG and since I haven't done a show since my last show there, this show represents a whole year of research and exploration. The few people that have already seen the pieces in the show all agree that this body of work is my best.

For the installation, I've had a secret object built. I'm really happy about how it came out so I'm excited for people to see it.

The opening is on September 5th, 7-10. Hope you can make it!

I love Kaiju toys, I collect lots of them, and I'm excited to be in a show with my favorite kaiju company, BLObPUS. My piece in the show is shown above. That opens on September 4th in Japan.

Also I'm in the Toy Karma 2 show at Rotofugi, curated by the legendary Mark Nagata. I'm very to be included in the show, I sent a bunch of cool stuff for it. Check out the show website.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night!! That was an amazing turn-out. I had a lot of fun and signed a bunch of stuff. More photos and info on the JapanLA blog.

We released the hand-printed skull shirts last night and we just added some to the online store.

We also recently got in some new stickers and new pins, so the sticker packs are looking extra sweet these days.

My awesome web guy just added added a twitter feed to my site. You can see it on every page on the left navigation bar. Below that is a new RSS feed button. He also added in a little icon in your browser's address bar.

Here's another toy that's been in the works for a while: My design of Zakkamono's Miao and Mousubi. I really like this toy because its round and awesome, and was designed in Hawaii (which is where I was born and raised). Each colorway is done in limited runs: 250 each of the black and pink, and only 100 of the green GID. More info here.

I bought a new Scion xB and I�m stoked!

When Scion launched a few years ago, I did some live painting for them at the LA Auto Show. And over the years, I�ve been to bunch of openings at their gallery in LA. All along I�ve felt that Scion really understood this scene and I really liked their cars. Then, a few months ago, I worked with Scion again on the big inflatable that they used on their annual tour. That was a fun project to be involved with (you can check out my older posts to see photos and video of me painting it).

I�ve been driving the same old car for the last six years, and I felt it was a good time to upgrade. And everyone is telling me that this is a good time to buy a car. I�m really happy with my new xB. I had driven all 3 models of Scions previously, so when I went to the dealership, I hadn�t even seen my car until after I bought it. And when the salesman showed me (in great detail) all the fun features it has, I was shocked to see that even with a manual transmission, it has cruise control. Maybe that�s nothing new to you, but that was music to my ears.

Earlier this year I got contacts, then I got an iphone, then a twitter account. Now I got a Scion. They all work so nicely together. Ah, technology.

FX show update

So I'm here in Orlando, at the FX show. Yesterday we released the new 5" Buff Monster x MINDstyle x Disney Stitch figure. I really like how this guy came out. I'll have some for available for sale here on my website, maybe in a few weeks.

End of Summer update

Oh, what a summer it's been. Here is a whole bunch of info about the recent past and the near future. First, above, me at the Metallica Disco in Manila. They even painted the cover of Ride the Lightning on the back wall of the main stage. And a photo of me and the guys at my Grey One Social signing. There are a ton of rad NEW photos of my 3 events in Manila here.

Of course, I just had a rad show at Corey Helford Gallery. I just put up all the new paintings from that show, and a few from my show at Giant Robot New York in April. Go here.

I released a couple prints this summer. The first one was released at Buff/Fest 2 and I held onto a few to sell here. The second one was released at Corey Helford Gallery, and you'll have to talk to them if you want one.

I put a few small pieces in a show at Giant Robot San Francisco over the weekend.

I'm involved in a lot of group shows coming up. In order, they are:

New Metal Figure

The next day I flew to Manila to do an event at Fresh Manila. Everyone there was so awesome. What an amazing turn out (see more photos here):

Then the next day I had at signing at Grey One Social, but I don't have any photos of that yet.

The following night, was the live model painting at Embassy. I was a bit stressed about painting in front of so many people without my usual wig and mask, but it worked out fine. Everyone was so stoked (more photos here).

Thanks so much to MINDstyle for putting together a great tour. Thanks to DNM, FreshManila, GreyOne Social and Embassy Cuisine for the great events. And special thanks to the FreshManila crew for showing me an amazing time in Manila. Can't wait to go back!

Mural in Portland

Lots of good stuff to show you. In no particular order, here are 7 awesome things from the last week:

I recently celebrated my birthday, and my brother had this insane cake made for me. It was probably about 12 inches tall. Super awesome. Unfortunately, I waited a little bit to take these photos.

The show at Giant Robot came out really well. I love to see all the new work up on the wall. Giant Robot was awesome to work with. I appreciate everyone for coming out to the opening. For purchasing info and more photos, check out their site. Photos never do the paintings justice because the fluorescent pink never pops and the metallics and glitters don't shine, but you get the idea.

A dedicated toy collector in England sent me photos of his collection. I love the set up. So amazing.

We got this one from a collector in Israel. Sweet.

Yes, I made some condoms. I always thought it would be rad to get a girl home and pull out a sweet custom condom. More info here.

Upcoming Giant Robot NYC Show

I'm hard at work on the new solo show at Giant Robot in NYC. The work in the show will really be a departure from what I normally paint. The show is inspired by my new-found love of Kaiju. It will also allow me to fully express my long-time love of heavy metal music. It's going to be so awesome. And we timed it to happen at the same time as New York Comic Con.

I am also part of a super rad show in Australia just before the NYC show. It takes place at the same time as the big Semi Permanent event. Check out the flyer:

We just confirmed a couple shows for next year. The first one is in NYC at the Giant Robot store. That's awesome. And in November, Buff is returning to Denver to show at Andenken's all new gallery space. And it's a perfect opportunity to get some killer snowboarding in.

We recently posted a video of Buff putting up flattened spray cans. The footage is from LA in 2001 and San Francisco in 2006.

Okay, well this isn't "new" but a year ago, Marlin Watson wrote a really good interview with Buff on the archinect website. check it out here.

New things in the works

Besides the website, we've been working hard on the first Buff Monster book. It will be out early next year and showcase a broad selection of drawings, installations, public paintings and photos never published anywhere.

Also coming out very soon are the new Buff Monster 1.5" figures! 8 different characters, gloss and matte black, with fluorescent chase figures. Comes packaged in a real mini ice cream cup.

The year in review

The following weekend was San Diego Comic Con. We released a very limited run of Albino Buff Monster figures with ToyTokyo.

We also did a couple customs: A Bart Simpson figure for the show at ToyTokyo, and a Darth Vader helmet for the big Star Wars convention in LA.
